Dr.Jivraj Mehta (1886-1977)


Dr. Jivraj Mehta was born in Saurashtra in Amreli district. His father was Narayanbhai and mother Zamakben.

He was the first person to be the Chief Minister of Free Gujarat.

Right from his childhood he was very good at studies and he wanted to be a doctor.
He made his carrier as a doctor and became so famous that he got the oppourtunity to cure Mahatma Gandhi.
After India got Independence and partition he served the people with all his efforts. He opened many medical camps for the welfare of the people. He was also the first "Diwan" of free India and he played his role as an "Diwan" very well.

In 1960 when Gujarat was divided into different state he was the first chief minister. Many a times it use to happen that he was harassed by his opponents but he was helpless. When he was elected second time the Chief Minister he was not allowed to perform his duties and so he resigned. At that time Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru appointed him as the High Commisioner in London. He was also appointed as a "Deen" in many of the hospitals. By nature he was very quite and loveable.

The hospital started by his name in Ahmedabad as "Dr. Jivraj Mehta Hospital" is constructed in order to pay tribute to this great man. He gave his service to the Nation for 91 years. In 1977 he left the world leaving behind his works.
